>> I am not big on gender issues, but let’s admit there’s a male and a female principle in music. The male mode would be to take one idea, analyse it, see what you can do with it, use all possibilities until the very end, wring it out – next one! Granny’Ark seems to start from a mood. Well assembled, her beautiful sounds fall like snow-flakes and melt in our ears to a wonderful flow. Amazed, we follow her development, like children hanging on the lips of a storyteller who leads us from one picture to the next. Change is introduced with such finesse that finally, the music feels more like a state than a song with different parts.
Thinking about it, standard categories such as Minimal Techno don’t fit at all. I wonder if it’s because Granny’Ark is trained in classical piano and also works as a visual artist. Intrigued, I asked her about the genesis of her music when she played at one of our events in Berlin. “There is no short description” she said, smiling enigmatically. “The long way is to say that I use mostly recorded sounds like field recordings and jams with friends. You could find samples from folk music and western movie soundtracks in there. People insist that my work is very melodic, too”. While listening to Granny’Ark’s tunes, I can’t decide if I prefer the original or the dub versions. “Gaching” and “Home” introduce straighter arrangements and a more compact format. The dubs open up to a broader experimental and harmonious field, they take you away. Listen and love ‘em!“ <<<<back
